Outlook Is Bleak For America And Both Presidential Candidates

With both major-party conventions over, now we know who’s going to win the presidential election in about eight weeks.
Nobody.
OK, that’s obviously not true. But if you look at the figures on unemployment and the percentage of Americans who think the country is on the wrong track, President Barack Obama needs to beat historic odds to win with such low numbers.
And if you look at the poor favorability rating and lackluster convention performance of Mitt Romney, there’s seemingly no way, from a historical perspective, he can win, either.
Those factors don’t even take into account the hundreds of millions of dollars being spent to make each candidate look bad.
Bottom line: One of them is going to get up off the mat to make history this year.
But who?
“In terms of looking for clear indications of who’s going to win, there aren’t any. It’s close,” said Frank Newport, editor in chief of the Gallup Poll.
Generally speaking, he said, Obama is better off than Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush were at this stage of the campaign, when both were on their way to losing re-election attempts. But Obama is worse off than Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton on their glide paths to second terms.
“I think it’s clear that our historical data shows Obama’s been right on the cusp,” Newport said.
The only comparable election in recent U.S. history where the forecast was so muddled was 2004, when George W. Bush’s numbers also were on the bubble.
Meanwhile, Romney actually got a negative bounce from the convention, Gallup found, and his acceptance speech received the lowest rating since Bob Dole’s in 1996; just 38 percent rated the speech as “excellent” or “good.”
Gallup also found that nearly 1 in 5 Americans — including 10 percent of Republicans — say they would not support a well-qualified Mormon for president. That figure is virtually identical with the one Romney’s father, George, faced when running for president in 1967.
However, in Gallup’s June survey, a third of Republicans — and more than 4 in 10 Americans — could not correctly identify Mitt Romney’s religion. Gallup’s analysis said that finding indicates that, if more voters do become aware of his beliefs, he could lose even more support over it.
It appears that Obama is getting a bigger convention bounce than Romney; although the weekly average of the Democrat’s approval rating sits at 44 percent, the daily rating has jumped to 52 percent, his highest of the past year with Gallup.
Still, Newport wants to wait before making any grand proclamations about the race.
“Next week, after the dust settles, if one or the other person is ahead, then they will have a leg up,” he said.
If not, Newport added, the debates in October are the next major opportunity to move numbers.
A key Romney supporter forecasts that we will see just such a movement toward the Massachusetts governor next month.
“I think the real historical analogy in this campaign is the 1980 election,” said Ari Fleischer, who was press secretary for the second President Bush. “You really get the sense that voters are measuring an incumbent and have already come to the conclusion that the incumbent has failed the country. They’re waiting to pass the final judgment on the challenger.
“My belief is that, just like in 1980, in October, you’re going to see a Mitt Romney breakthrough, and that Mitt Romney’s going to win by a comfortable margin actually.”
But Obama campaign spokesperson Frank Benenati said that, despite the negative indicators, the president is ready to make history again.
“From the outset, we said this would be a close election due to the historical challenges faced by the president when walking into the Oval Office,” Benenati said.
“Ohioans will have to decide which vision they prefer, and while we aren’t where we want to be yet, they see how the turnaround in the Buckeye State serves as an example of how the president’s policies are the right path — like saving the auto industry and the 1 in 8 Ohio jobs it supports, investing in manufacturing and cutting taxes for the middle class and small businesses.”
Of course, some history is guaranteed this year: Americans will either elect the first Mormon president or re-elect a black president for the first time.

"Mitt Romney Has been Unfairly Demonised":Ann Romney

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's wife Ann today said that her husband has been unfairly 'demonised by opponents and there are so many good things about him that have not been told.
"I do recognise that we have not had a financial struggle in our lives.... But I want people to believe in their hearts that we know what it is like to struggle," Ann Romney told 'Meet The Press' of the NBC news in an interview.
"And our struggles have not been financial, but they've been with health and with difficulties in different things in life," Ann said in a joint appearance with Mitt Romney, which was aired Sunday.

Century Fox Report: TODAY WHAT PEOPLE THINK ABOUT MITT ROMNEY
"And in particular, for Mitt -- who really has been demonised in many ways as being heartless and for people to stand up and say, 'Excuse me. He was there when my son was dying of leukemia. He came to my son's bedside. He did all of these things for my son.' And then another woman saying how Mitt was there for her.
"So there's hundreds of those stories that haven't been told," Ann said in response to a question.
She said it was refreshing to her for the American people to finally be able to see the lens through which she see her husband and the perspective in which she understand how he operates.

"I think that was why we were all so pleased with so many Americans, were so pleased with the last election and seeing that a black man was elected as president of the United States. It made us proud as Americans to know that those prejudices that we've had in the past are -- are falling away," Ann Romney said.

‘Possession’ Is Top Weekend Film On Sales Of $9.5 Million

The horror tale “The Possession” led U.S. and Canadian ticket sales for a second straight weekend, taking in an estimated $9.5 million for Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (LGF) in one of the lowest three-day movie sales periods in a decade.
The film bested two newcomers. “The Words” was third with $5 million and “The Cold Light of Day” opened in a distant 13th place with sales of $1.8 million, researcher Hollywood.com Box-Office said in an e-mailed statement. Among returning films, “Lawless” collected $6 million in its second week of release to come in second place.
Three-day weekend revenue for the top 12 films slipped 20 percent to $52 million from the year-earlier period, and declined 39 percent from the $85.5 million recorded last week, Hollywood.com said. The sales of all films offered this week is an estimated $67 million, almost 18 percent lower than the same period in 2011.
“It was the lowest grossing weekend of the year and one of the lowest of the decade,” Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com Box-Office, said in an e-mail. “The post-Labor Day weekend is always slow, but with no strong newcomer and little holdover strength as evidenced by the first place movie only earning $9.5 million, the results were less than spectacular.”
“The Possession,” made for about $14 million, has generated $33.4 million since it opened on Aug. 31, according to researcher Box Office Mojo. Sam Raimi, who directed three “Spider-Man” movies and several horror pictures, is the producer.

New Wrinkle

The film adds a new wrinkle to well-trod horror genre by drawing on Jewish folklore for the malevolent spirit that inhabits the body of a young girl. The son of a Hasidic rabbi takes on the task of freeing the child from the spirit, known as a dybbuk. The movie features Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick and hip hop artist Matisyahu as the exorcist.
The Prohibition-era crime story “Lawless,” from Weinstein Co., features Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jessica Chastain, and is based on the true story of the Bondurant brothers, three Virginia moonshiners who smuggled whiskey and battled lawmen during the Great Depression. It’s taken from the book “The Wettest County in the World” and has pulled in $23.5 in the two weeks since its debut.

New Releases

“The Words,” from CBS Films, stars Bradley Cooper as an author who becomes famous after stealing another writer’s work. His new life of celebrity unravels after the real author confronts him. The film also features Jeremy Irons and Zoe Saldana.
In “The Cold Light of Day,” Henry Cavill stars as an American tourist whose family is kidnapped by intelligence agents during a vacation in Spain. Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver co-star. The film, from Lions Gate Entertainment’s Summit unit, opened in April in Europe and parts of the Middle East.
Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables 2,” also from Lions Gate, had sales of $4.8 million to finish in fourth place in its fourth week of release. The picture, a follow-up to the 2010 hit, had taken in $75.4 million since Aug. 17.
Stallone and his team of mercenaries in the film seek revenge for the murder of one of their comrades. The picture features an all-star list of action heroes including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Chuck Norris.
“The Bourne Legacy,” from Comcast Corp. (CMCSA)’s Universal Pictures, was fifth with sales of $4 million. The film, the fourth in the Bourne saga, begins a new storyline without the namesake character of the first three films or actor Matt Damon. Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner stars as super-soldier Aaron Cross. Sales since its release five weeks ago total $103.7 million.

Weekend Sales

“ParaNorman,” a 3-D animated children’s film from Laika Entertainment and Universal’s Focus Features, was sixth with revenue of $3.8 million. The PG-rated comedy-thriller follows a misunderstood boy who can speak to the dead. Kodi Smit-McPhee provides the voice of Norman. Anna Kendrick and Christopher Mintz-Plasse co-star.
Domestic film sales this year have risen 3.3 percent to $7.7 billion, with attendance up 2.1 percent.

U.S. ‘Not Setting Deadlines’ For Iran

The U.S. is “not setting deadlines” for Iran and still considers negotiations as “by far the best approach” to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.
Asked if the Obama administration will lay out sharper “red lines” for Iran or state explicitly the consequences of failing to negotiate a deal with world powers by a certain date, Clinton said, “We’re not setting deadlines.”
“We’re watching very carefully about what they do, because it’s always been more about their actions than their words,” Clinton said in the interview with Bloomberg Radio after wrapping up meetings at an Asia-Pacific forum in Vladivostok, Russia.
While the U.S. and Israel share the goal that Iran not acquire a nuclear weapon, Clinton said there is a difference in perspective over the time horizon for talks.
“They’re more anxious about a quick response because they feel that they’re right in the bull’s-eye, so to speak,” Clinton said. “But we’re convinced that we have more time to focus on these sanctions, to do everything we can to bring Iran to a good-faith negotiation.”

Taking Stock

A high-level meeting of the United Nations’ atomic agency is just days away, and U.S. officials have said it will be an important moment to take stock of Iran’s nuclear progress and the pressure the international community should exert to halt it. The International Atomic Energy Agency reported last month that Iran raised the uranium-enrichment capacity at its underground Fordo facility and increased stockpiles of medium- enriched uranium, a step short of nuclear-bomb material.
In the past week, Clinton has been to both China and Russia, speaking with leaders of both nations to seek unity in their Iran stance. Afterward, she said China and Russia share the U.S.’s firm view that Iran must be stopped from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
The Obama administration still believes the best way to do that is to continue to offer a negotiated settlement, while increasing the pain for Iran of refusing to accept the deal by squeezing it with financial and oil sanctions, she said.

Iran’s Claim

In June, negotiators for six world powers proposed that Iran ship out its stockpiles of 20-percent enriched uranium --to remove the potential that it will further processed to 90 percent to fuel a nuclear bomb -- and to stop enrichment at Fordo in exchange for energy and aviation incentives. Israel wants all Iranian uranium enrichment halted and enriched uranium removed.
Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful electric power and medical purposes and has rebuffed any deal that it sees as giving up its right to enrich uranium.
Efforts by international negotiators “to pin Iran down on what exactly they are willing to do are still under way, and we will be having some meetings in the next month in New York and elsewhere to take stock of where we are,” Clinton said.
Leaders from the six powers involved in negotiations with Iran are expected to attend the annual UN General Assembly in New York this month.
“It’s a very challenging effort to get them to move in a way that complies with their international obligations,” Clinton said of the Iranians. “But we believe that is still by far the best approach to take at this time.”

Immunity Zone

Asked about pressure from Israel to give Iran an ultimatum to dismantle disputed aspects of its nuclear program within months, Clinton said the U.S. has “always said every option was on the table, but we believe in the negotiation,” and are at the same time stepping up pressure from sanctions.
Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak have indicated that as Iran proceeds with its nuclear work and negotiations stall, Israel may have no choice but to launch a preemptive strike in self-defense. Iran’s leaders have denied Israel’s right to exist.
Barak has said the Jewish state may need to act militarily before Iran reaches a “zone of immunity” where its underground enrichment facilities would be invulnerable to Israeli air strikes. Barak said Sept. 6, referring to the U.S., that “we face a common challenge, but the clock is ticking at a different pace for each of us.”

‘Existential Threat’

Asked what Israel was telling the Obama administration behind closed doors, Clinton said, “I don’t think that there’s any difference in their public and their private concerns.”
“They feel that it would be an existential threat if Iran were a nuclear-weaponized state, and no nation can abdicate their self-defense if they feel that they’re facing such a threat,” she said.
At the same time, Clinton said Israel has supported the Obama administration’s effort to unite the international community behind the toughest sanctions ever.
“The sanctions, we know, are having an effect,” she said.
Since April, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- the U.S., the U.K., France, China and Russia - plus Germany, have engaged in three rounds of diplomacy with Iran. Even with pressure from an array of new U.S. and EU sanctions on energy, trade, banking and shipping, the talks have failed so far to persuade Iran to suspend aspects of its nuclear program.

Oil Exports

Clinton has said that Iran, which depends on oil for more than half of its government revenue, is losing billions of dollars from lost oil sales due to sanctions.
Iranian oil exports dropped 66 percent in July from a year earlier, to less than 1 million barrels a day, as the U.S. and the European Union tightened sanctions, according to a report by Rhodium Group, citing customs data. Rhodium estimates exports at about 940,000 barrels a day, compared with 1.7 million barrels a day in June and 2.8 million in July 2011, the New York-based economic research group said Sept. 5 in an e-mailed report.
The chief negotiator for the six world powers negotiating with Iran, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, last spoke with her Iranian counterpart, Saeed Jalili, more than a month ago, and said at the time more progress was needed to close the gap before any return to talks.
Over the weekend, Ashton met with EU foreign ministers in Cyprus, and said new sanctions on Iran were under consideration.

Westerwelle’s Comment

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle flew to Israel for talks yesterday with Netanyahu. “Nuclear arms in the hands of the Iranian government is not an option and we will not accept this,” Westerwelle said, according to an e-mailed statement from Netanyahu’s office.
The U.S., European allies and Israel accuse Iran of seeking an atomic bomb capability. In its report last month, the International Atomic Energy Agency said it “is unable to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran, and therefore to conclude that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities.” The IAEA said it hadn’t detected any material being diverted from Iran’s 16 declared nuclear facilities.

Sex Diet For Women

"I don't think a day goes by when at least one patient – and usually more – complain that their sex drive is dropping off and want to know what they can do about it," says Laura Corio, MD, a gynecologist and clinical instructor at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
The Correct Diet will definately bring back the magic in a womans life.

The Following Foods will not only increase a womans libido but also turn on the savage in her.

1. Celery

While celery may not be the first food that comes to mind when you're thinking sex, it can be a fantastic source food for sexual stimulation. This is because it contains androsterone, an odorless hormone released through male perspiration and turns women on.

2. Raw oysters
This is one of the classic aphrodisiacs. Oysters are high in zinc, which raises sperm and testosterone production. Oysters also contain dopamine, a hormone known to increase libido. Also, the experience of shucking a raw oyster is erotic. Try incorporating it into your foreplay -- feed her and have her feed you. The slippery taste sensation and the mere act of shucking should get you both in the mood.

3.Bananas
If you want sex to go the extra mile, fuel up for foreplay just as you would for a marathon. A big banana is the perfect food for bedroom endurance: Bananas contain B vitamins, which are key for converting carbohydrates into energy and are believed to help manufacture sex hormones such as testosterone.

4.Dark Chocolate
A recent Italian study found that women who report eating chocolate on a daily basis claim to have more satisfying sex lives.

5.Flaxseeds
1 tablespoon of flaxseeds a day helps increase testosterone — the chemical with the most direct libido-boosting effect, according to Helen Fisher, Ph.D., author of Why We Love and a WH advisor. Besides enhancing sex drive, these nutty-flavored seeds contain essential fatty acids, including omega-3 and omega-6, which are the major building blocks of all sex hormones.

5. Almonds (or nuts in general)
Almonds are a prime source of essential fatty acids. These are vital as they provide the raw material for a man's healthy production of hormones. Additionally, the smell of almonds is purported to arouse passion in females. Try lighting some almond-scented candles to encourage her mood and snack on some (but not too many) yourself to store up energy for your performance.

6. Mangoes, peaches and strawberries
What can be more fun than sinking your teeth into a drippy, sticky-sweet fruit? Probably doing that as a prelude to (or during) sex. All of the above fruits and their shapes, textures and succulence are erotically suggestive and can be fun to use amid foreplay.

7. Eggs
Although not the most sensual of foods, eggs are high in vitamins B6 and B5. These help balance hormone levels and fight stress, two things that are crucial to a healthy libido. Eggs are also a symbol of fertility and rebirth.

9. Figs
These are high in amino acids, which are believed to increase libido. They can also improve sexual stamina. Furthermore, the shape of a fresh fig and the sweet, juicy taste are two tangible aspects that are highly pleasurable to the human senses.

10. Garlic
Yes, you might need to stock up on some extra breath mints, but it'll be worth it. Garlic contains allicin, an ingredient that increases blood flow to the sexual organs. As such, it's a highly effective herb to help increase libido. If the odor just won't work for you -- or you can't stand garlic -- you and your lady can always take garlic capsules instead.

US Treasury To Sell $18 Bn Of AIG Stock

NEW YORK: NEW YORK: The U.S. Treasury Department said it will sell most of its stake in insurer American International Group Inc, making the government a minority investor for the first time since it rescued the company in the depths of the financial crisis four years ago.

While the Treasury was universally expected to sell stock this month, the magnitude of the planned $18 billion offering was a surprise that will take the government stake in what had been the world's largest insurer to around 20 percent from 53 percent currently.

The sale announced on Sunday will trigger a number of changes for AIG, the most important of which is that it will now fall under Federal Reserve regulation as a savings and loan holding company since the company owns a small bank. The Treasury will also lose the ability to dictate the terms of further stock sales.

AIG said it would buy up to $5 billion of the offering. Last week the company sold part of its stake in the Asian insurer AIA  to help fund that buyback. A number of analysts who follow AIG said at the time they were disappointed the company was not buying back more shares, although they also assumed the eventual government offering would be much smaller than it has turned out to be.

Barclays Capital, in a research note Friday, said investors were likely to be disappointed if the government was not out of the stock by the November election.

Century Fox Post Report:  FEDERAL RESERVE OFFICIALS WARN OF LOOMING ECONOMIC CRISIS
POLITICS AT PLAY?

The sale, Treasury's biggest sell-down of its AIG stake so far, comes as President Barack Obama campaigns for a second term and has been forced to defend his support of decisions to use taxpayer money to prop up companies during the financial crisis.

The administration has been unwinding its position in the politically unpopular financial crisis programs ahead of the election, amid heavy Republican campaign pressure over the value of the bailouts, with more than 300 small banks having yet to repay taxpayers.

The government also still owns 74 percent of Ally Financial Inc, the former General Motors auto finance unit that was wrecked by bad mortgage loans.

Likewise, The government has redeemed all of its holdings of Citigroup Inc except for $3 billion of preferred securities on which it receives an 8 percent dividend.

But the Treasury has steadfastly denied it was rushing to exit the AIG stake before the election, a stance it reiterated on Sunday, even as the repeated profitable sales of the insurer's stock burnished the reputation of the crisis-era rescue programs. That boost could help the president in his election battle with Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

More:  AMERICAN JOB MARKET WORSENS: AUGUST REPORT
The announcement also comes in the week that the Federal Reserve is expected to announce it is providing the U.S. economy with further monetary stimulus, probably through a third round of so-called quantitative easing.

Expectations of the Fed action helped to drive the S&P 500 to its highest level in more than four years last week, meaning market conditions could be welcoming for the larger AIG sale. The stock has also benefited from that run-up, gaining more than 10 percent in the last month.

MORE TO COME

With the Treasury's break-even point at $28.72 and AIG shares closing Friday at $33.99, this sale is likely to be profitable as were the government's four prior offerings of the company's stock.

If the Treasury were to sell $18 billion at AIG's Friday closing price, it would be selling roughly 529 million shares.

Treasury said it will also grant to the underwriters a 30-day option to purchase up to an additional $2.7 billion of common stock to cover any over-allotments. If that option were exercised in full, it would cut Treasury's stake in the company closer to 15 percent.

Vitamin A Intake Could Cure Cancer: Study

Intake of vitamin A in diet could help treat several forms of cancer due to its ability to control the malignant cells, a new study has found.
Scientists have hailed the discovery as a “new dawn” in cancer treatment after finding a link between malignant cells and lack of vitamin A.
Experts at the University of York found that cancer cells are under control of a derivative of the vitamin, known as retinoic acid, the ‘Daily Express’ reported.
They believe that vitamin A can be used as new anti-cancer treatment and advised people to ensure they include adequate levels of the nutrient in their diets.
The study was carried out on prostate cancer cells but Professor Norman Maitland of Yorkshire Cancer Research believes the treatment could apply to other cancers as well.
“This may apply to a number of other cancers,” said Maitland.
Maitland, however, warned people not to rush out to buy vitamin A supplements, which could be toxic and even cancerous in high doses.
Instead he advised people to take vitamin A in their daily diet, including oily fish, carrots, liver, red pepper and dark leafy vegetables.
“We hope vitamin A will be used to prevent prostate cancer and we also believe that a derivative of vitamin A could help destroy prostate cancer cells or make them more treatable once they have started to spread. Clinical trials based on this research could herald a new dawn in treatment for prostate cancer patients,” he said.
He said that retinoic acid is already used to treat a blood cancer and has been extremely successful in improving survival rates to 80 per cent.
“It has been known for years that low vitamin A in samples of blood is associated with prostate cancer, but nobody knew the mechanisms involved. We have for the first time revealed a biological link,” Maitland said.
The study is published in the journal ‘Nucleic Acids.

Congress Bandh Hits Life In Odisha

Around 200 protesters were today taken into custody for picketing near government offices and other place during a state-wide bandh which disrupted train and road traffic and hit normal life.
The bandh has been called by Congress against alleged police crackdown on partymen during a rally on September 6.
More than a dozen trains were stopped at several railway stations including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Khurda Road, Berhampur and Sambalpur as bandh supporters staged dharna on the tracks, a spokesman of East Coast Railway (ECoR) said.
Vehicular movement virtually came to a grinding halt in many parts of the state as passenger buses, trucks and autorickshaw remained off the roads, police sources said.
A large number of passengers were seen stranded at railway stations and bus stands at many places, while roads wore a deserted look during the one-day shut-down.
City bus services in many places like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri were suspended.
Shops, business establishments and commercial centres downed their shutter in major areas including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Balasore, Sambalpur, Bolangir, Rourkela, Baripada, Bhadrak and Angul, sources said.
Schools, colleges and other educational institutions remained shut in most areas.
Around 200 Congress supporters including some party leaders were taken into custody in places like Bhubaneswar, Rourkela and Cuttack while picketing near government offices and other places to enforce the bandh, called in protest against alleged crackdown by police during a party rally at MG Road here on September 6, sources said.
Elaborate security arrangements were made by the police with heavy deployment of force throughout the state to prevent any untoward incident during the shut-down.
“The situation is peaceful and no untoward incident has so far been reported from any part of the state. We are keeping a close vigil,” a senior police official said.
In the state capital, about 51 platoons of force (around 1700 personnel) have been deployed at different places while strict vigil is maintained near government buildings, vital installations and other sensitive locations.
“Our bandh call has evoked overwhelming support from the public. It is peaceful and complete success,” said Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Niranjan Patnaik.
“It shows people are against the BJD government headed by Naveen Patnaik,” he said.

Debate, Outrage Over Cartoonist Aseem's Arrest

Kanpur-based cartoonist Aseem Trivedi who was arrested on charges of posting seditious contents on his website is seen outside a Mumbai court. PTI

The arrest of cartoonist Aseem Trivedi for allegedly displaying questionable caricatures of Parliament, the national emblem and the Constitution has sparked outrage among people.
Aseem was remanded to police custody till September 16 after being produced before a holiday court on Sunday.

His arrest has been criticised by voices from across the board. Aseem's family and other anti-corruption activists criticised the move claiming there was nothing unpatriotic about his cartoons.
"My son has done no wrong. He was only expressing his opinion and certain people have misunderstood his work. He was only showing how corruption has plagued the system. Only the truth," said Ashok Trivedi, Aseem Trivedi's father.
Justice Markandey Katju, Press Council of India chairman, on Sunday defended Aseem Trivedi saying the cartoonist has done nothing illegal.
"My opinion is that the cartoonist did nothing illegal. In a democracy many things are said, some truthful and others false," Katju said in a statement.
To drive home his point, Katju recalled his own words as a judge and said he used to often say in court that people can call him a fool or crook inside the court or outside but he will never initiate contempt of court proceedings, because either the allegation is true, "in which case I deserve it, or it is false, in which case I will ignore it".
"These are occupational hazards, and politicians, like judges, must learn to put up with them," Katju said.
He maintained that arresting a cartoonist or any other person who has not committed a crime is itself a crime under the Indian Penal Code as it is a wrongful arrest and wrongful confinement.
Aseem's arrest is a curb on a citizen's freedom of expression and charging him with sedition is outrageous, lawyers also said.
"Trivedi is not dishonouring anything, he is expressing his ideologies and viewpoints through his cartoons. Only people of low intellect don't understand that. His arrest is a complete curb on freedom of expression," Mahesh Jethmalani, criminal lawyer, said.
An IAC spokesperson alleged Trivedi "was badly roughed up and pushed into the police vehicle where his head banged against the vehicle body".
"We are shocked at the way an artist and activist is being treated by police. The IAC Mumbai will always support freedom of expression which is the right of every individual given to us by the constitution," the spokesperson said.
Social Media was also abuzz after Aseem's arrest with everyone criticising his arrest and pledging full support to him.
Everyone took to Twitter to show their protest and support to the cartoonist. A message was also circulated on Twitter insisting Twiterrati to change their display picture to the cartoon (depicting national emblem as wollf) for which Aseem was booked.
Music Director Vishal Dadlani changed his display picture and tweeted, "It is an artist's duty to be a mirror to the Nation. #AseemTrivedi has done no wrong by showing the tragic state of India. #FreeAseem".
Kiran Bedi on her tweet said, "Cartoons are an expression of reality. Instead of reacting by use of state power, why not consider these as an opportunity to reflect?"
