Workplace Stress Takes A Toll On Your Heart

Those in high-stress positions with little say in the office could be working themselves into a heart attack, according to a new European study.
A study published in The Lancet medical journal on Friday showed those with demanding jobs and little freedom to make decisions are 23 per cent more likely to experience a heart attack compared to their less-stressed counterparts.

“The pooling of published and unpublished studies allowed us to investigate the association between coronary heart disease and exposure to job strain with greater precision than has been previously possible,” lead researcher Mika Kivimäki of University College London said in a news release.  “Our findings indicate that job strain is associated with a small, but consistent, increased risk of experiencing a first coronary heart disease event such as a heart attack.”

Kivimäki said while previous studies have looked at job strain and its effect on the human heart, the findings were often limited in their scope.
The new collaborative project examined the results of nearly 20,000 surveys from 13 studies that were conducted in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the U.K. between 1985 and 2006.

Participants completed questionnaires at the beginning of the studies that assessed job demands, excessive workload, the level of time-pressure demands, and freedom to make decisions.
The researchers then recorded 2,356 incidents of non-fatal heart attacks over the course of seven years.

The results showed a clear link between heart disease and stress even after lifestyle, age, gender and socioeconomic status were taken into account.
While lower stress levels are healthier for the heart, Kivimäki said cutting out risk factors such as smoking, or being more physically active remain a more effective means of avoiding heart disease.

One labour relations expert told CTV News that workplace stress is on the rise as the work day moves beyond the eight-hour realm with employer-issued laptops and smartphones.
“People are working more,” Mike Cuma of the Legacy Bowes Group told CTV News.
“They are working longer hours, more overtime. They are actually being required to put out more efforts of work.”
Dr. Brian Baker of the Heart and Stroke Foundation has studied the effects of stress on the heart for decades and said that stress is a health problem that has not been properly recognized.
“It’s best that you not ruminate, you not obsess about your work,” said Baker. “Because then you are more liable to the effects of stress over time.

iPhone 5 Review: Beauty And Versatility

SAN FRANCISCO - As I played around with the iPhone 5, I wondered what the late Steve Jobs would have thought about the latest twist on Apple’s best-selling device.
It didn’t take long to conclude that Jobs would have been delighted with the iPhone 5’s blend of beauty, utility and versatility.
Add in the more advanced technology and new features that went into this iPhone, and it’s clear Apple has come up with another product that will compel hordes of people to line up outside its stores before its release next Friday.
After going on sale in the U.S., Japan, Britain, Germany, France and four other countries, the mad dash will be repeated again on Sept. 28 in 22 other countries. All iPhone 5 models will sell for the same prices as their predecessors, starting at $199 with a two-year data and calling plan.
An important caveat about these impressions: I was allotted only about 15 minutes with the iPhone 5 at Wednesday’s launch event, not enough time to discover if it might have some technological bugs.
For many people, the iPhone is going to be a case of love at first touch.
It is incredibly light and seems easier to hold. That means it might not be dropped as frequently as previous iPhones, reducing the chances of the glass on the display screen getting damaged.
The new iPhone also is easy on the eyes, thanks to a larger screen and its “Retina Display,” the high-definition technology that Apple introduced in previous models. Video and photos look even lusher on the iPhone 5’s bigger and better screen.
At 4 inches diagonally, the iPhone 5’s screen is a half-inch larger than previous generations. That’s still smaller than the one on Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S III, but the iPhone 5 is lighter.
Apple made sure to take advantage of the larger display. The extra space means you can now see five rows of apps on the home screen instead of the previous four.
The larger screen really comes to life, though, with what is perhaps its coolest feature — a tool called Panorama that automatically stitches together a series of pictures into a majestic vista. Panorama can be turned on simply by going into the iPhone 5’s camera mode and selecting it on an option menu.
Once it’s activated, an arrow guides you as you slowly pan the camera around whatever scenery you desire. If you move too fast, Panorama tells you to slow down. It also advises you if you are moving the camera too high or low. Once you are done, you can look at the panoramic shot within seconds and zoom into whichever areas of the picture look most interesting.
The device is also speedier because it has a more powerful processing chip and upgraded wireless technology that accelerates Web surfing.
Apple also has equipped the iPhone 5 with a superior sound system, courtesy of the new headphones that the company says it spent three years developing. The headphones, called EarPods, are a vast improvement on the earbuds that Apple has been giving away with its devices for more than a decade.
The new phone’s operating system, iOS 6, also introduces another fun toy that makes it easy to share photos with your friends and family. Just select a picture, or even a series of photos, then email them to whomever you want, without the need for messy attachments.

Panetta: US-Japan Agree On New Defence System

TOKYO— U.S. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said Monday that U.S. and Japanese officials have agreed to put a second defense system in Japan aimed at protecting the country from the threat of a missile attack from North Korea.
The exact location of the radar installation has not yet been determined. It will be in the south, officials said, but not in Okinawa.
Officials stressed that the system would be aimed at protecting the region against the threat from North Korea and is not directed at China.
The U.S. already has similar early warning radar systems on ships in the Asia-Pacific.
This second Japan-based system will allow the U.S. vessels to spread out and cover other parts of the Asia-Pacific region.
Panetta said the new installation would also be effective in protecting the U.S. homeland from a North Korea threat. He spoke during a press conference in Tokyo with the Japanese defense minister, Satoshi Morimoto.
While officials insisted the radar system would not be aimed at China, the decision was sure to raise the ire of Beijing.
The radar will "enhance our ability to defend Japan," Panetta said, adding that he would talk to Chinese leaders about the system to assure them that this about protecting the U.S. and the region from North Korea's missile threat.
"We have made these concerns clear to the Chinese," he said. "For that reason ... we believe it is very important to move ahead" with the radar system.
Japan has worked closely with the U.S. for several years on missile defense, and has both land- and sea-based missile launchers.
North Korea's ballistic missiles are considered a threat to security in the Asia-Pacific region because of the risk of conflict erupting on the divided and heavily militarized Korean peninsula, and because of the secretive North's nuclear weapons program.
The long-range rockets it is developing have been test-fired over Japan and could potentially reach the U.S.
The North conducted its latest long-range rocket launch in April, defying a U.N. ban. Pyongyang said the launch was intended to send an observation satellite into space but it drew international condemnation as the rocket technology is similar to that used for ballistic missiles.
The launch was a failure and the rocket disintegrated shortly after takeoff.
Panetta is on his third trip to Asia in 11 months, reflecting the Pentagon's ongoing shift to put more military focus on the Asia-Pacific.
The defense chief is urging countries involved in territorial disputes in the region to find a way to peacefully resolve those problems before they spark provocations and violence.
Panetta's visit to Japan is also likely to include discussions about the deployment of V-22 Ospreys there. Thousands of people have protested the hybrid aircraft's planned use, saying they are unsafe.
The Pentagon plans to deploy 12 of the aircraft, which take off and land like a helicopter, but fly like a plane. U.S. officials have assured Japanese leaders the Ospreys are safe.

CBI Files Fresh FIRs In Coal Scam

There are about 10 companies under scrutiny for illegalities committed in procuring coal blocks, the sources said.

"We will finalise the companies that have to be booked by the end of the week. Of the 10 companies that are under the scanner at the moment, we will register cases against four or five in this set of FIRs," a CBI official said.

Century Fox Report: Govt cancels allocation of Coal blocks of 3 companies

Sources also indicated that the agency will shortly carry out searches in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Orissa as part of the probe of the FIRs.

In the first set of FIRs the agency filed on September 3, five companies and their directors were booked for misrepresenting facts and colluding with government officials to ensure coal block allocations. According to sources, the companies that are to be booked now also have political connections.

The agency suspects a key role was played by some top officials in various ministries who facilitated the allocation of coal blocks to suspect companies.

More: True Depth of Coalgate Scam

Apart from the companies, the CBI is all set to tighten the noose on some senior government officials from the states and the Centre for facilitating coal block allocation to ineligible companies.

According to sources in the CBI, Congress MP Vijay Darda, his brother Rajendra Darda - Maharashtra's higher education minister, and mining baron Manoj Jayaswal will be interrogated soon to get to the bottom of the conspiracy.

Sources indicate the agency is likely to question them about their links with former minister of state for coal Santosh Bagrodia during whose tenure one of their companies - AMR Iron and Steel - was allocated coal blocks.

"We will not just interrogate the directors of the companies named in the FIRs but also officials who we suspect had links with the companies. Some of the people who will be called for questioning could also be potential witnesses," a senior CBI officer said.

Ghaziabad Violence, 3 Officers Suspended

GHAZIABAD: Even as the situation remained tense in Masuri, policemen stationed there shudder to think about the violence and hope that nothing of that sort ever happens again. Meanwhile, three police officers were suspended on Sunday for their "failure" to provide intelligence inputs and control the situation during Friday night's violence.

Cops said that the drama outside the police station continued for around an hour. "The crowds soon spread in all directions and took control of the entire area. "On finding the situation out of control, the SP (rural), ADM, SDM (Sadar) Keshwar Kumar and me hid till additional forces came to control the frenzied mob," said Sajid Hussain, chairman of Dasna Nagar Palika, who had come to enquire about the situation. The rioters did not stop and started pelting stones in which the SP (rural) was injured.

"We tried to calm the mob and hold discussions, but when they did not stop we were forced to lob tear gas shells at 8pm. Even after that the agitators did not stop and we ordered lathi charge to disperse the crowd. We also fired rubber bullets," said ADM RK Sharma.

"We made all attempts to calm the agitators for one hour and 10 minutes. When we found our lives in danger, then I finally ordered firing at 8.40pm to disperse the mob," Sharma added.

" Masuri station officer, P K Singh, Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) SSI Jal Singh Saini and SI DP Singh have been suspended for their failure to control the situation and provide intelligence inputs," said SSP Ghaziabad, Prashant Kumar. District authorities have also recommended the transfer of circle officer (Sadar) Ajay Kumar and suspension of CO LIU Mohini Pathak and sub-divisional magistrate Keshav Kumar, Kumar added.

Aseem Trivedi: "My Cartoons Will Now Spew More Venom"

Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi, who was arrested on sedition charges, said he would continue to draw cartoons that raise issues like corruption, as people in large numbers thronged the railway station to receive him.
Trivedi, who belongs to Shuklaganj in adjoining Unnao district, was received by his parents and hordes of supporters who took him in a procession to his hometown.
The cartoonist, arrested on September 8 and released on September 12, said at the railway station that he would continue to oppose corruption through his cartoons, which he said would now spew more venom.
He said it was his mission to root out corruption from the country.
“Anna Hazare has said it is fortunate to go to jail for the sake of your country. I had gone to jail to remove corruption from the country and hence there was no reason to repent or be afraid of,” he said.
The 25-year-old cartoonist was arrested under IPC Section 124 (sedition), Section 66 A of Information Technology Act and Section 2 of Prevention of Insults to Nation Honour Act. He was released after Bombay High Court granted him bail.
The freelancer has been accused of putting up banners mocking the Constitution during a rally of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare late last year and posting the same on his website.
Trivedi was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by a member of Republican Party of India.
