iPhone 5 Gets 2 Million Orders

CUPERTINO, CALIF. — Orders for the iPhone 5 topped 2 million in their first 24 hours, more than double the amount of its predecessor over the same period.
Since Apple started taking iPhone 5 orders on its website at 3 a.m. EDT on Friday, buyers who have a two-year service agreement with AT&T, Sprint or Verizon Wireless have been able to order the phone for $199 (16 gigabyte model), $299 (32 GB) or $399 (64 GB model).
Century Fox report: iPhone 5, Pros and Cons
Apple said Monday that while most orders will be delivered on Friday, demand for the iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply. As a result, some of the devices are scheduled for delivery in October.
The Cupertino, Calif. company’s stock added 1.2 percent, or $8.50, to close at $699.78 on Monday.
The iPhone 5 represents the first major revision of the iPhone’s screen size since the first model was introduced in 2007. The new iPhone has an elongated screen — 4 inches (10.16 centimeters) measured diagonally — that allows room for another row of icons and lets widescreen movies fit better. The calendar will now show five days at a time instead of just three. Previous iPhone models had 3.5-inch (8.89-centimeter) screens. The new phone is also thinner and weighs less than previous models. It can operate on LTE cellular networks and sports a new processor and updated software.
T. Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, said he believes the iPhone 5’s “differentiated form factor versus the iPhone 4S” and other improvements should drive strong iPhone 5 sales. The record advanced orders on Friday and through the weekend caused Walkley to revise his previous prediction that Apple would sell 6 million of the new iPhones by September 29. He now believes “Apple could ship 9 million to 10 million” in that time, he told investors in a note on Monday.
Janney Capital Markets analyst Bill Choi said Apple’s announcement Monday “suggests iPhone 5 is running well ahead of iPhone 4S.” In a note to investors, Choi reaffirmed his earlier expectation that Apple will sell 7 million to 10 million iPhone 5s by the end of September.
It won’t be easy for Apple to top the breakneck sales pace set by previous iPhones.
Apple said last year that it sold over 4 million iPhone 4Ss just three days after its launch on October 14.
The iPhone 5 will be available at Apple’s 356 U.S. stores starting Friday. Each customer who makes a purchase at an Apple store will be offered free personal setup service, which will help them customize their device.
The phone will be available in more than 22 countries on Sept. 28.
Aside from Apple stores, the iPhone 5 will be available at Apple’s website as well as through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, some Best Buy, RadioShack, Target and Walmart stores.

iPhone 5 Review: Beauty And Versatility

SAN FRANCISCO - As I played around with the iPhone 5, I wondered what the late Steve Jobs would have thought about the latest twist on Apple’s best-selling device.
It didn’t take long to conclude that Jobs would have been delighted with the iPhone 5’s blend of beauty, utility and versatility.
Add in the more advanced technology and new features that went into this iPhone, and it’s clear Apple has come up with another product that will compel hordes of people to line up outside its stores before its release next Friday.
After going on sale in the U.S., Japan, Britain, Germany, France and four other countries, the mad dash will be repeated again on Sept. 28 in 22 other countries. All iPhone 5 models will sell for the same prices as their predecessors, starting at $199 with a two-year data and calling plan.
An important caveat about these impressions: I was allotted only about 15 minutes with the iPhone 5 at Wednesday’s launch event, not enough time to discover if it might have some technological bugs.
For many people, the iPhone is going to be a case of love at first touch.
It is incredibly light and seems easier to hold. That means it might not be dropped as frequently as previous iPhones, reducing the chances of the glass on the display screen getting damaged.
The new iPhone also is easy on the eyes, thanks to a larger screen and its “Retina Display,” the high-definition technology that Apple introduced in previous models. Video and photos look even lusher on the iPhone 5’s bigger and better screen.
At 4 inches diagonally, the iPhone 5’s screen is a half-inch larger than previous generations. That’s still smaller than the one on Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S III, but the iPhone 5 is lighter.
Apple made sure to take advantage of the larger display. The extra space means you can now see five rows of apps on the home screen instead of the previous four.
The larger screen really comes to life, though, with what is perhaps its coolest feature — a tool called Panorama that automatically stitches together a series of pictures into a majestic vista. Panorama can be turned on simply by going into the iPhone 5’s camera mode and selecting it on an option menu.
Once it’s activated, an arrow guides you as you slowly pan the camera around whatever scenery you desire. If you move too fast, Panorama tells you to slow down. It also advises you if you are moving the camera too high or low. Once you are done, you can look at the panoramic shot within seconds and zoom into whichever areas of the picture look most interesting.
The device is also speedier because it has a more powerful processing chip and upgraded wireless technology that accelerates Web surfing.
Apple also has equipped the iPhone 5 with a superior sound system, courtesy of the new headphones that the company says it spent three years developing. The headphones, called EarPods, are a vast improvement on the earbuds that Apple has been giving away with its devices for more than a decade.
The new phone’s operating system, iOS 6, also introduces another fun toy that makes it easy to share photos with your friends and family. Just select a picture, or even a series of photos, then email them to whomever you want, without the need for messy attachments.

iPhone 5: Pros And Cons

You can pre-order the iPhone 5 starting at midnight. But should you? Or would it be better to wait and see it in person before plunking down wads of cash? Well, there are reasons to do it, for sure. But there are also reasons to hold off.
PROS
Larger screen - Going from a 3.5-inch screen to a 4-inch screen isn't that big a jump, not when Samsung's current bestseller is a 4.8-incher. But the extra screen real estate means more icons on the home screen, more navigation options in apps and HD movies shown without the black bar "letterbox" effect.
4G LTE connectivity - Even if you don't know what 4G refers to, you probably know that it means faster data on phones. "LTE," another admittedly mysterious term, is the best flavor of 4G, delivering data so fast it can feel like you're on a cable modem. Apple is the last smartphone maker to join the 4G party, and it's about time it did.
Century Fox Reports: iPhone 5 is an Absolute Jewel
Better battery life - The trouble with 4G LTE is that it tends to be a battery drainer. But Apple seems to have solved that problem, and even managed to give the iPhone 5 better battery life than its predecessor, too. Battery life is Apple's stock and trade: The company will sacrifice features to keep battery life long, but in the iPhone 5, there doesn't appear to be a real downside.
Less glass - It's hard to find an iPhone user who hasn't smashed their screen at least once, so it was a little bit bizarre when Apple decided, with the iPhone 4, to give it a second pane of glass, on the back. Yes, it made the phone astoundingly beautiful, but it meant more to smudge and yes, more to shatter. With the iPhone 5, we return to the more sane world of just one glass pane.
Faster chip - While most of us mere mortals, me included, don't need to worry about the processor power of our smartphones, gamers who yearn for console-like experiences will appreciate the improved processing and graphics might of the iPhone 5's brand-new A6 chip. And the rest of us might notice that photo and video processing, and everyday app usage, have gotten a tad quicker.Thinner and lighter - This may not be apparent from the presentation, but take it from me, when you hold it, the phone feels impressively thin and impressively light, especially given the larger screen and longer battery life.
CONS
iOS 6 on older iPhones - Many of the amazing new features discussed by Apple — turn-by-turn navigation, 3-D maps, Passbook ticket and gift card system, sports-score-spouting Siri — come with free iOS upgrade for anyone with a 4S. (Most, though not all, of the features are actually available to anyone with a recent-model iPhone, iPad or iPod.) Since the upgrade goes live on Sept. 19, it's probably smart to take advantage of it (assuming we don't report any hiccups). If you're happy with iOS 6 on your current phone, you may not need the new one.
Camera isn't big step up - Pictures will look better on the iPhone 5, and you can shoot smart panoramas, and get better results in low light. But the camera is not radically improved — it's just a shrunk-down version of last year's 8-megapixel camera. Don't expect a monster difference for most of your snapshots.
Lack of 4G LTE coverage - Check your carrier's coverage maps before you buy! That sweet 4G LTE technology isn't going to be everywhere. It's not a dealbreaker: The current iPhone is quick enough for most cellular data needs, and even without LTE, the iPhone 5 will be too. But if you're buying for powerhouse data speeds, you have to know the territory. Here's where to check coverage on AT&T,Sprint and Verizon WirelessDesign not as iconic - Though the two-slabs-of-glass approach did lead to extra shattering, the iPhone 4 (and 4S) made a design statement that nobody but Apple could have pulled off. The design of the iPhone 5, while attractive and (in our reader poll, at least), a new favorite for Apple fans, lacks the timeless industrial look of its predecessor.

Lightning port-speaker dock incompatibility - I don't want to belabor this, because the new Lightning connector is a design improvement and long overdue, but it's worth pointing out that if your current lifestyle includes many iPhone docks and car chargers, these will require an awkward $29 adapter if you want to keep using them with an iPhone 5. Some car chargers have a USB port, so you can connect any cable you want — in this case, you'd want to buy an extra $19 USB-to-Lightning cable. It's cheaper, and will come in more handy later. But unless you go wireless, and stream audio via AirPlay or Bluetooth to a compatible sound system, you may need to buy a new Lightning-compatible dock — once it's available.
AT&T
Chart explains the cost of upgrading to an iPhone 5 before you're eligible.
You're not eligible for upgrade - Maybe you're dying for an iPhone 5, but you only bought an iPhone 4S six months ago. Well, you're gonna have to pay three times what someone who's up for an upgrade will have to. Bummer but the carrier-subsidized pricing system only adds up when customers buy phones at set intervals. It's just math.
Android and Windows Phone advantages - This isn't a piece about what's better, iPhone or its competitors running Android and Windows Phone. But we have to at least mention this: Although technology-wise, the iPhone 5 has caught up to most of the competition, there are other phones with larger screens and software benefits that people in the market for a new phone may want to check out. Both Android and Windows Phone still have a distinct advantage in home screen customization, for example, and Android still wins on notifications, data management and voice recognition.
WELL?
Hopefully this helped you make up your mind somewhat. I'm definitely interested in seeing more of this phone, but we also want to provide enough information for you to make a sensible decision for your own situation. Apple has confirmed that pre-ordering starts Friday at 12:01 a.m. Pacific/3:01 a.m. Eastern, but unless you're 100 percent sure, give it a few days, and don't forget to grab that iOS 6 update on Sept. 19

Apple iPhone 5 Is An Absolute Jewel

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple on Wednesday introduced its new iPhone 5, a lighter, thinner and more powerful version of its iconic mobile device.
Apple chief executive Tim Cook called the launch "the biggest thing to happen to iPhone since the iPhone."

"It is an absolute jewel. The software and engineering that went into this product is the most challenging our team has ever taken on," said Apples's Marketing Chief Phil Schiller at the packed launch ceremony of the product in San Francisco

"It is the thinnest iPhone we have ever made, it's the world's thinnest smartphone and weighs just 112 grams," said Schiller. He added that it is 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S.

Apple will start taking orders for the phone from Friday onwards and will begin shipments from September 21 in the US, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Australia and Japan. Apples's iPhone 5 will be available in 100 countries by the end of the year. Pricing for US customers will start at $199.
The introduction has been among the most keenly anticipated in the tech world, with rumors and leaks over several months about the new device from the biggest company in the sector.

Schiller said that the new, taller iPhone, made of glass and aluminum, features a new design to nestle in one's palm to naturally align with thumbs. He added that it works on the faster mobile internet networks known as LTE.
"When you carry your phone it should fit beautifully in your hand, that is just how we designed iPhone 5," he said.

"Everything you do looks gorgeous on this beautiful widescreen display," he said, describing the so-called Retina high-definition four-inch (10 centimeter) display used on other Apple devices
The new device features Apple's own new A6 processor, which according to Schiller doubles the speed for loading web graphics.

He also said that the phone would address consumer complaints by extending battery life to eight hours use with mobile phone and browsing and 10 hours if Wi-Fi connections are used.
The iPhone 5 includes an improved camera with "new dynamic low-light mode," and "a precision lens alignment," Schiller noted.

Apple has also installed its own mapping software, upgraded its voice-activated assistant known as Siri and incorporated Facebook in the iOS software.
Analysts expect Apple to sell tens of millions of the new iPhone in the coming months, luring in smartphone buyers who have been waiting to upgrade their phones.

"This iPhone 5 will turn out to be Apple's biggest home run yet. This will be the biggest and most successful Apple iPhone launch so far," independent analyst Jeff Kagan said. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said it is possible that Apple may ship between 48 million to 53 million iPhones in the fourth quarter and "up to 266 million" in 2013. She further said that the company could sell eight to 10 million in the third quarter.

More: Used iPhones flood the market in anticipation of iPhone 5

Apple has fierce customer loyalty and has been rapidly gaining users, but has lost market share to the faster-growing segment of smartphones powered by Google's Android operating system.
Smartphones powered by Android software continued to dominate the US market during the past months. However, according to comScore's report, Apple's iOS is the second most popular platform with 33.4 percent market share.

According to comScore, Samsung mobile phones remained most popular in the United States with 25.6 percent of the market. Third-place Apple gained ground to claim 16.3 percent as of the end of July.

Apple is engaged in litigation with Samsung over patent infringement and is seeking to ban US sales of some Samsung devices after a major court victory in California last month. Nicholas Carlson of the website Business Insider said the new iPhone launch represents "the most pivotal moment" for the sector.
"Companies that are, collectively, worth a trillion dollars — Samsung, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and more — have bet billions of dollars building competitors to the iPhone," said Carlson.

"Today, they find out if Apple has once again leapt way ahead of them, or if finally, the battleground is growing even," Carlson added.

Century Fox Report: Apple is Most Valuable Company

Apple shares have hit record high this week and have extended the company's position as the world's most valuable firm. They edged up 0.7 percent to $665.36 on the news. Apple is widely expected to launch a smaller version of its market-leading iPad tablet computer later this year.
