Junagarh: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi continued his attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi for her foreign trips on Friday and accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of misleading the nation on the issue. He said RTI replies from Indian embassies abroad pointed to the fact that lakhs of rupees were spent on the Congress chief's foreign trips.
Modi's fresh salvo came on a day when the PMO said in a statement that the government did not sponsor either Sonia's foreign visits or her medical treatment, hence rubbising Modi's claims that the government had spent Rs 1,880 crore on her travels.
Taking a dig at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Modi said if the reports on the whopping amount being spent on Sonia Gandhi's foreign trips were false, then why did not the government react before. Speaking at a campaign rally in Junagarh, Modi said the PM said that only Rs 3 lakh were being spent on Sonia's travel abroad but RTI replies revealed something else.
The BJP leader said Sonia Gandhi visited London twice, in 2007 and 2011 and during two of her visits, the money spent for her trip was Rs 2.82 lakh and Rs 35 lakh, respectively. He also said the Congress leader's trip to China cost Rs 14 lakh and Rs 12 lakh, respectively. While mentioning names of other countries she visited and the expenditures incurred, Modi said he had no problem with Sonia's medical treatment.
