Analysis: President Obama Vs Mitt Romney

One of the most irrelevant and politically effective questions asked by challenging politicians is bandied about again this year: "Are you better off than four years ago?"
Ronald Reagan made hay with that query during his 1980 campaign against incumbent Jimmy Carter. Mitt Romney and his Republican colleagues are using the tactic again this year against a latter-day set of Democratic incumbents.
This ploy always works to a degree when the economy is struggling. Quite a few voters are bound to say "yes" without thinking whether their answer would be the same if the other side were in office.
Whether a given constituent feels better or worse is an individual attitude that can't accurately be linked to broad official economic policies. Some might remain economically irritated even as the economy improves, perhaps at a rate faster than would be the case under the challengers' policies. Some might be optimistic despite lagging economic indicators because they see improvement on the horizon.
The point here is not to choose sides but to allege the paucity of the question and its answers — except as a campaign ploy.
Voters will react with general attitudes and expectations about the candidates and, this year more than most, their party philosophies. In 2012 the party platforms are more polarized than any time in my memory, and Republican candidates, in particular, are trapped in their harsh pronouncements.
So, as you might have discerned by now, I will vote for Barack Obama for another term, largely in opposition to Republicanism and Romney-ism.
In fact, Mitt Romney would be an appealing candidate but for his discouraging fealty to his party's right wing, which almost no Republican candidate these days can escape. Obama has been a disappointment to many because he and his followers promised and expected too much, but it was inevitable.
In 2007 and 2008, any campaign challenging the incumbent would promise change, and Obama's personality was bound to produce an emotional appeal. A winning Democrat back then had to promise hope and change. So it would have been had the tables been turned.
No person who would have taken the office then could suddenly turn the economy around. Obama & Co. did make bold moves with stimulus and bailout, and I think on balance they were the right policies, as did most Republicans when they were launched in the final days of the Bush administration. Looking back, it's easy for those without responsibility to criticize, a contingent I joined from time to time.
Then Obama became even bolder with his health care initiative, which, in my view, will go down as one of the most important watershed moments of civic gain in our history. Getting started was a monumental achievement. Developing the program will take forever and is postponed so long as Republicans en masse promise only obstruction and repeal. To defeat this notion is one of the most important reasons to support Obama this year.
The contrast between Obama and the hapless Romney on health care and women's reproductive rights is enough to send me toward Democrats, but the economic plans of Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, are not more promising than the incumbent's. The stonewall tactic of the GOP on tax increases is enough to earn disdain. The debt and deficit they properly worry about won't be attacked effectively without both revenue increases and spending savings — and to think revenue can be increased at the same time taxes are reduced is folly.
Better off than four years ago? Depends on many factors beyond the reach of politicians in Washington regardless of party. Crafting the best way forward? The broad center where best answers lie belongs to the Democrats.
Obama for President.
History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives.

4 American Soldiers Shot In Afghanistan

At least one Afghan police officer turned his gun on NATO troops at a remote checkpoint in southern Afghanistan before dawn Sunday, killing four American service members before escaping, according to Afghan and international officials.

It was the third attack by Afghan forces or insurgents disguised in military uniforms against international forces in as many days, killing eight troops in all.

Recent months have seen a string of such insider attacks by Afghan forces against their international counterparts. The killings have imperiled the military partnership between Kabul and NATO, a working relationship that is key to the handover of security responsibilities to Afghan forces as international troops draw down.

The most recent attacks also come amid an international uproar about an Internet video mocking the Prophet Muhammad that many fear could further aggravate Afghan-U.S. relations. The video has sparked protests throughout the Muslim world and the Afghan government blocked the YouTube site that hosts the video and its parent company, Google Inc., over the weekend in a move to prevent violent protests.

So far, protests in Afghanistan have remained peaceful.
Details of Sunday's attack were slow to come out because it took place in a remote area, said Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for the international military in Afghanistan. He said the attacker was still at large but it was unclear if there were multiple assailants.

"The attack took place in the vicinity of an outpost in southern Afghanistan. It is my understanding that it was a checkpoint," Graybeal said. International forces often work with Afghan police to man checkpoints as part of the effort to train and mentor the Afghan forces so that they can eventually operate on their own. The goal is to turn over all security responsibility for the country to the Afghans by the end of 2014, though numbers of NATO forces have already been reduced in many areas.

Afghan officials said the checkpoint in Zabul province's Mizan district first came under attack from insurgents sometime around midnight. American forces came to help the Afghan police respond to the attack, said Ghulam Gilani, the deputy police chief of the province.

It was not clear if some of the Afghan police turned on their American helpers in the middle of the battle with the insurgents, or afterward, or were somehow forced into attacking the American troops by the insurgents, Gilani said.
"The checkpoint was attacked last night. Then the police started fighting with the Americans. Whether they attacked the Americans willingly we don't know," Gilani said.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said the police were not affiliated with the Taliban insurgency.
"But they are Afghans and they know that Americans are our enemy," Ahmadi told The Associated Press.

He said all four of the dead were American. A U.S. official speaking on anonymity because the information had not been officially released confirmed that the four killed were American.
The coalition said in a statement that they were investigating what happened.
There were also international troops wounded, Graybeal said. He said that early reports showed two were hurt and that they were receiving treatment. He did not say how serious the injuries were.

So far this year, 51 international service members have died at the hands of Afghan soldiers or policemen or insurgents wearing their uniforms. At least 12 such attacks came in August alone, leaving 15 dead.

On Saturday, a gunman in the uniform of a government-backed militia force shot dead two British soldiers in Helmand district in the southwest.
Britain's defense minister said the two soldiers, from 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, were killed at a checkpoint shooting in Nahri Sarraj district of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, where the Taliban have their strongest roots.

NATO said earlier that the gunman was wearing a uniform used by the Afghan Local Police, a village-level fighting force overseen by the central government.
That strike came a day after insurgents wearing U.S. Army uniforms attacked a military base, killing two American Marines, wounding nine other people and destroying six Harrier fighter jets, military officials said. Fourteen insurgents were killed.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack and said that it was revenge for the video insulting Prophet Muhammad.

In the capital on Sunday, several hundred university students chanted "Death to America!" and "Long life to Islam!" over several hours to protest the video. Riot police cordoned off the area and the protest ended without incident in the early afternoon. A smaller protest went forward in the western city of Herat.

Iran Warns That It Will Demolish Israel

TEHRAN— The top commander in Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard warned Sunday that ‘‘nothing will remain’’ of Israel if it takes military action against Tehran over its controversial nuclear program.
Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari said Iran’s response to any attack will begin near the Israeli border. The Islamic Republic has close ties with militants in Gaza and Lebanon, both of which border Israel.
Iran has in the past made reference to the destruction of Israel but his comments at a Tehran news conference were unusually strongly worded and detailed.
He also said that Iran warned that oil shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz will be in jeopardy if a war breaks out between Iran and the United States. Iranian officials have previously threatened to close the waterway, the route for a fifth of the world’s oil, but less frequently in recent months.
Gen. Jafari also told a news conference in Tehran Sunday that if it is attacked, Iran will no longer be committed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, under whose terms U.N. inspectors visit Iranian nuclear sites. He said however that this does not mean that Iran would build a nuclear weapon.
The U.S and Israel have both left open the possibility of a strike on Iran if diplomacy fails to stop what it says is a push for a nuclear weapon. Tehran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
Gen. Jafari however said that Iran believes the United States won’t attack Iran because it is very vulnerable and its military bases in the Middle East are within the range of Iran’s missiles. Jafari also said Israel is very unlikely to take unilateral action.
Israel believes that any attack would likely unleash retaliation, in the form of Iranian missiles as well as rocket attacks by Iranian proxies Hezbollah and Hamas on its northern and southern borders.
Jafari’s comments come as U.S.-led naval forces from the West and Arab allies gather for naval maneuvers in the Persian Gulf that include mine-sweeping exercises.

US Withdraws Diplomats From Tunisia And Sudan

US embassy in Tunis, Tunisia
A policemen checks damage to vehicles inside the US embassy in Tunis after it was attacked by protesters on Saturday.
The US state department has ordered non-essential staff from its embassies in Sudan and Tunisia to leave with their families and warned its citizens against travelling to the two countries owing to concerns over rising anti-American violence.
"Given the security situation in Tunis and Khartoum, the state department has ordered the departure of all family members and non-emergency personnel from both posts, and issued parallel travel warnings to American citizens," said a spokeswoman, Victoria Nuland.
In Tunisia, the warning advised Americans that the international airport in Tunis was open and encouraged all US citizens to depart on commercial flights.
It said Americans who chose to remain in Tunisia should use extreme caution and avoid demonstrations. On Friday, protesters climbed the walls into the US embassy in Tunis, torching cars, attacking the entrance building and setting fire to a gym and a neighbouring American school.
In Sudan, the warning said that while the Sudanese government had taken steps to limit the activities of terrorist groups, some remain and have threatened to attack western interests.
The terrorist threat level remains "critical" throughout Sudan, the department said. It noted that US officials were already required to travel in armoured vehicles and to get permission to travel outside Khartoum, where crowds set alight part of the German embassy and tried to storm the US embassy on Friday.
A US official said on Saturday that Sudan's government was holding up the deployment of an elite marine team it planned to send to Khartoum to boost security at the embassy.
Meanwhile, the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, spoke to leading officials from seven countries on Saturday to discuss the situation following a wave of protests and violence over an anti-Muslim film that has swept across the Middle East and elsewhere in recent days. An obscure, amateurish movie called Innocence of Muslims, which depicts the prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womaniser and a paedophile, sparked the outrage.
On Tuesday, protesters in Egypt breached the walls of the US embassy in Cairo, then well-armed extremists attacked the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killing four Americans, including the US ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens. Since then, protests over the video have spread to more than 20 countries in the Middle East, Africa and south-east Asia. While most demonstrations were peaceful, marches in several places turned violent, including in Tunisia and Sudan.
Clinton spoke to the prime minister of Libya, the president of Somalia, and the foreign ministers of Britain, Egypt, France, Saudi Arabia and Turkey on Saturday, Nuland said.
She spoke to the Libyan prime minister, Mustafa Abushagur, about the importance of bringing the consulate attackers to justice, Nuland said. The prime minister "expressed confidence that the attackers would be brought to justice, noting that the government was already starting to take action", she added.
Clinton thanked the Egyptians, Turks and Saudis for their condemnations of the violence and spoke of the need to ensure security at diplomatic missions, Nuland said. Clinton and the Egyptian foreign minister, Mohamed Kamel Amr, also "agreed that while the film may be offensive and reprehensible, it cannot be used as justification for violence", she said.
The state department travel warnings came as President Barack Obama paid tribute to the Americans killed in Benghazi in his weekly radio address and denounced the anti-US protests that have followed.

Pakistan Bomb Blast Kills 14 People

A roadside bomb killed 14 people and wounded six in northwest Pakistan on Sunday, a government official said.
The blast targeted a passenger van in the Lower Dir district near the village of Bunr, said Hussain Ahmed, the official.
The bomb was remotely detonated, he said.
Details about the van's occupants were not available. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The bombing in the Lower Dir district is the latest violence to strike Pakistan's tribal region that borders Afghanistan.
The district is one of 24 that make up the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
It was formerly known as the North West Frontier Province, a name assigned during the British colonial rule. The ruling party changed the name to reflect the province's majority Pashtun population.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is rife with Islamic extremists and has been the site of recent clashes between Pakistani security forces and militants.
The attack took place in an area of the city where several international agencies have offices. In addition to the U.S. Consulate, the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, is in the area.
In May 2011, a remote-controlled car bomb targeted a convoy of U.S. Consulate vehicles in Peshawar, killing one person and wounding 11. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
In April 2010, three explosions went off in rapid succession near the consulate.

Bharat Bandh On 20th Sept, To Protest Against Diesel Price Hike

New Delhi: BJP-led NDA will hold a country-wide protest on September 20 protesting against the central government's decision to hike the diesel price and allow FDI in multi-brand retail.
Announcing the alliance's decision here, BJP leader L K Advani said, "NDA on Sep 15 decided to hold a nation-wide strike on 20th of this month. I am sure that the suffocation felt by the people for a long time is about to come to an end."
Addressing the press with Sushma Swaraj and other senior leaders of the coalition he said "it would be prudent and wise for the government itself to decide that they do not wait till 2014 for the people to give their opinion about the UPA government. Let them call for an early election. Let the people make a decision."
Stating that the government should be allowed to rethink over all its acts, the BJP leader said "if they are able to do that on their own by giving resignation-- the Lok Sabha elections are also due shortly-- I think it will be fine."
He said no political party's consent was taken by the government before making these announcements. "They have not consulted any political party and Chief Minister and have announced this suddenly. This is something which the country is not going to take lying down," Advani said.
He said NDA leaders have talked "informally" to other political parties and "I think the 20th September strike will be spontaneous and successful". "This is the betrayal of Parliament, people and thousands of traders in the country," Advani alleged.

Pope Requests Middle East Leaders To Work For Peace

BEIRUT — Pope Benedict XVI prayed on Sunday that Middle East leaders work toward peace and reconciliation, stressing again the central theme of his visit to Lebanon, whose neighbour Syria is engulfed in a civil war.
"In a world where violence constantly leaves behind its grim trail of death and destruction, to serve justice and peace is urgently necessary," Benedict said in his homily at an open-air mass on Beirut's waterfront.
"I pray in particular that the Lord will grant to this region of the Middle East servants of peace and reconciliation, so that all people can live in peace and with dignity," he added.
An estimated 350,000 people were gathered under a bright warm sun to join the pontiff as he celebrated a solemn mass on the final day of his three-day visit to Lebanon.
In his homily, the pope said service is key to the practice of a Christian life, noting that Jesus Christ came into into the world not to be a powerful political leader, but a servant.
"Service is a foundational element of the identity of Christ?s followers. The vocation of the Church and of each Christian is to serve others, as the Lord himself did, freely and impartially."
On Saturday, the frail, 85-year-old pontiff urged Middle Eastern Christians and Muslims to forge a harmonious, pluralistic society in which the dignity of each person is respected and the right to worship in peace is guaranteed.
Those who desire to live in peace must have a change of heart, Benedict said, which involves "rejecting revenge, acknowledging one?s faults, accepting apologies without demanding them and, not least, forgiveness."
He said the universal yearning of humanity for peace can only be realised through community, comprising individual persons, whose aspirations and rights to a fulfilling life are respected.
Lebanon is a multi-faith country in which Muslims make up about 65 percent of the population and Christians the balance.
The pope came with a message of peace and reconciliation to Lebanon and to the wider Middle East, which have been torn by violence, often sectarian, over the years.
He said the conditions for building and consolidating peace must be grounded in the dignity of man.
Poverty, unemployment, corruption, addiction, exploitation and terrorism "not only cause unacceptable suffering to their victims but also a great impoverishment of human potential. We run the risk of being enslaved by an economic and financial mindset, which would subordinate 'being' to 'having'."
Without pointing fingers, he said "some ideologies undermine the foundations of society. We need to be conscious of these attacks on our efforts to build harmonious coexistence."
Benedict noted that Christians and Muslims have lived side by side in the Middle East for centuries and that there is room for a pluralistic society.
"It is not uncommon to see the two religions within the same family. If this is possible within the same family, why should it not be possible at the level of the whole of society?
"The particular character of the Middle East consists in the centuries-old mix of diverse elements. Admittedly, they have fought one another, sadly that is also true. A pluralistic society can only exist on the basis of mutual respect, the desire to know the other and continuous dialogue."
Central to that, the freedom "to profess and practise one?s religion without danger to life and liberty must be possible to everyone."
Echoing his words Lebanon's Sunni mufti, or spiritual leader, Mohammed Rashid Kabbani, said the events rocking the Arab world "bring us Muslims and Christians a light that shows us the path to a better tomorrow, though they also bring many dangers that are a threat to us.
"But just as we made our history together in the past, we will also make our future together, based on coexistence."
The pope's outreach to Muslims is particularly poignant as the region is rocked by the deadly violence over the anti-Islamist film that cost the lives of the US ambassador to Libya and three other Americans on Tuesday.
On Saturday, the pope met with thousands of youth, urging Muslims and Christians to "live side by side without hatred, with respect for the beliefs of each person, so as to build together a free and humane society.
Addressing a number of Syrians among them, he said: "I want to tell you how much I admire your courage," adding that he was "sad because of your suffering and your bereavement."
The pope returns to Rome on Sunday evening.

Congress Learns To Admire Manmohan Singh

For anyone other than the Nehru-Gandhis to win and command the respect and admiration of the Congress party members is an impossible thing. Even Pranab Mukherjee, the man for all crises, was disliked intensely by a large section of the party workers and activists. The attitude of the party towards prime minister Manmohan Singh is quite different. No one ever saw him as part of the Congress family. He remained an outsider, a useful techno-bureaucrat who is needed to find solutions to policy challenges.
But he has never been considered a pillar of the party, something that P Chidambaram, Digvijay Singh, AK Antony enjoy. Singh has turned the status of a political cipher into an advantage. He has fought the political battle for his space in the party not on the basis of secularism, socialism and all those favoured and jaded Congress shibboleths, but on technical, economic issues.
In 2008, he turned the India-US civil nuclear deal as the battle-point. Seasoned politicians and political aficionados laughed at his naivete. But Singh turned it into a successful political issue in the 2009 Lok Sabha election. There were no immediate economic benefits to be had from the prospect of nuclear power. It will be 20 years before generation of electricity through nuclear power will become a critical factor in the Indian energy scenario.
Congressmen and Congresswomen are used to the mystical charisma factor of the First Family, but they do not understand the phenomenon of politics being played on the basis of development and performance which has nothing to do with welfare measures. Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has shown that performance matters, but then, Delhi is much too small a political theatre. Manmohan Singh is staking his claims of performance and development and of taking the economy forward on the national stage.

Singh is doing something better than P V Narasimha Rao. He has kept away from party feud, while Rao engaged in it with the relish of a grassroots politician, and in the end he was politically destroyed by his rivals and opponents in the party. He is playing the outsider to the hilt. It has been said time and again, both by party insiders and party watchers, that the unforgivable political crime that Rao committed was the attempt to destroy the Nehru-Gandhi roots in the party. There is as yet no hard evidence to show that this was so, except through hearsay.
It seems that Singh is showing the Congress without challenging the authority of the Nehru-Gandhis that what a party needs is hard thinking on policy issues and its implementation. And that he is the man for the task. Of course, he faces the risk of failure and the consequent political decapitation.
Singh has been helped greatly by the atavistic NGOs who are arguing against nuclear power as well as FDI in multi-brand retail. The BJP, the main opposition party, has been gunning for Singh in the two major scams — 2G spectrum allocation and coal block allocation — but it had displayed a fatalistic Swadeshi Jagran Manch mind-set in opposing nuclear power and FDI in retail. Faced with the BJP onslaught, the Congress had to rally round Singh and the government.
Without intending to do so, Singh provoked opposition offensive which called for a Congress response and he became the hero of the battle. The BJP took pot shots at Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, but their main target is Singh. As a matter of fact, BJP is playing a sly political game suggesting that it is time Rahul Gandhi stepped forward because it would be easier to attack him than Singh.
A young BJP leader suggested that Rahul Gandhi should not just join as a cabinet minister because after 2014, he will just be a former minister. But if he were to become the prime minister, then post-2014 he can enjoy the status of former prime minister. Singh’s critics had always mocked him that he was a better politician than an economist, and their criticism is turning out to be true much to the consternation of the opposition.
Singh, the political warrior, may not emerge a victor in the 2014 electoral battle. But his war cry, “Let us go down fighting” could turn out to be prophetic and even heroic. The Congress has at last found a leader who is capable of leading the party and the government through thick sniper fire and they seem to be grateful for it. Singh’s bravado on policy front is unlikely to negate the general perception that corruption has really eaten into the UPA government as it had the Rao government through 1991-1996.
But Singh can take satisfaction that he has kept the party in power for a decade and that he has done his bit. And unlike in the case of Rao, Singh will enjoy the gratitude of Congress. There are lessons here for other Congress leaders if they mean to lead the party and the country. They must come forward with ideas, look meek and unambitious, press forward with policy issues with fanatical ferocity and not play small games inside the party. Congress has shown that it does not grudge leaders who use brains to push economic doctrines as Singh does.
