Your generous hips may make you groan as you wriggle into your jeans every morning, but believe us, this is a blessing in disguise. Aside from the fact that carrying extra weight on your hips, bum and thighs protects you from heart problems, men like you that way too. The revelation that men prefer women to be curvier is based on logs of online sex-related searches.
The study supports the theory that people don’t bother to lie to search engines; they just look for what they actually want. Here are some reasons why curvier women are hot.
Curves give men a drug high. Watching a curvaceous woman can feel like a reward in men’s brains, much as drinking alcohol or taking drugs might.
Researchers at Georgia Gwinnett College, US, had 14 men rate how attractive they found pictures of the naked derrieres of seven women before and after cosmetic surgeries that gave them more shapely hips. Brain scans of the men revealed that seeing post-surgery women activated parts of the brain linked with rewards, including regions associated with responses to drugs and alcohol.
They make men want children. Hourglass figures are particularly stimulating for men. This could be because wide hips have long been linked with good health and the ability to carry healthy babies.
Women with curves are also supposed to be more intelligent. A 2007 study of 16,000 women conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California, US, found that women with hourglass figures scored higher on intelligence tests than very thin women or women with thicker waists.
They put you in Salma Hayek’s camp. Media professional Gagan Jain, 32, who has been married for the past six years says, “Most guys I know always prefer women with curves. Curvy is more fun, sexually. Thin women tend to have bodies like little boys, which is not exactly the most appealing thing for guys. Most women guys think are hot, tend to be curvy. When was the last time you heard a guy swoon over Kate Moss like he would over Salma Hayek?”
Men are conditioned to love them. Psychologist Dr Rima Mukherji believes social conditioning is another reason for men liking curvier women. “Men look up to their mothers and from a young age, they’re subconsciously conditioned to look for the characteristics and physical features of their mum in their partners,” she says. “And since most of our mothers have post-pregnancy bodies, men consider curves beautiful.” Now, isn’t that great news?
